The Mother Church of Porto Moniz, dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, is situated in the heart of the village, in the area known as Penedia. Its central position, next to the Municipal Council building, makes it a prominent landmark for anyone exploring the locality. Framed by Porto Moniz's coastal environment, the church harmoniously integrates into the main urban landscape.
This church was erected in the late 17th century, bearing witness to the development of Porto Moniz village over the centuries. Its construction began in 1660, initiated by Francisco Moniz, and was completed approximately eight years later, in 1668. Its foundation marks an important period in the religious and social history of the local community, serving as the main parish temple ever since.
Although it presents an exterior with simple architectural lines, the interior of the Mother Church of Porto Moniz reveals an interesting artistic heritage. Its main highlight is the main altar, enriched with gilded carving work, which adds a particular brilliance to the space. Inside, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament houses various works of art that deserve attention.
In addition to these central elements, the temple holds other valuable pieces, such as silk vestments, lamps, candlesticks, and various silver items, which enrich the church's artistic and historical collection, reflecting the devotion and cultural legacy of the community.
