The Mother Church of São Pedro is located in Ponta do Pargo, a characteristic parish on the western coast of Madeira Island. It is situated in the Pedregal area, within the municipality of Calheta, in a serene setting. Its surroundings are marked by extensive open and green fields that stretch across the landscape, offering wide views of the natural scenery of this part of the island.

Heritage and Architecture:

The history of the Church of São Pedro has its roots in the mid-16th century, the period when the parish of Ponta do Pargo was established. Although its origin is linked to an older chapel, the building observed today results from a significant campaign of works completed in 1851, which transformed the original structure. Architecturally, the church exhibits a Mannerist style, distinguished by its bell tower of imposing presence and a gable-ended main facade, complemented by an architrave-arched portal that defines its entrance.

Interior Details:

Inside the Mother Church of São Pedro, visitors find an environment of devotion and art. Among the most notable pieces is a gilded silver chalice with a six-pointed star base, considered one of the oldest artifacts on Madeira Island, its dating preceding the construction of the current church itself. In addition to this singularly valuable historical piece, the space also houses various altarpieces, some of which date from the 20th century, enriching the artistic collection and complementing the temple's religious atmosphere.
