Situated in the city of Funchal, in the São João urbanization, this chapel is located in an urban environment. It stands on a walled and fenced churchyard, with an access staircase, and is peculiarly positioned next to the stream that crosses this part of the city.
The chapel is part of a complex of historic buildings, namely the old Franciscan hospice that flanks it, and which currently houses nuns, lending the place an atmosphere of serenity and a continuous connection to its original purpose.
The history of Capela São João is profound, dating back to the early 15th century. Around 1432, Franciscan friars established a cenobium here, making this site one of the oldest records of religious presence on the island of Madeira. Over the centuries, the site has witnessed various transformations and challenges.
The chapel we see today is largely the result of reconstructions and adaptations, especially after a flood in the early 18th century that caused great ruin. This heritage is a symbol of resilience, remaining a place of worship and a historical and cultural landmark for the community of Funchal.
The interior of Capela São João reveals a remarkable artistic collection, characteristic of the Baroque period. Its single nave invites contemplation of the details, from the choir loft with its wooden balustrade, to the pulpit, richly crafted in white and gold painted wood, surmounted by the figure of the dove of the Holy Spirit.
In the main chapel, the gilded altarpiece, dated 1750, stands out as a central piece of great value. The side walls are adorned with Rococo azulejo panels from Lisbon workshops, depicting scenes alluding to the life of Saint John. The ceiling, a wooden false vault, surprises with a trompe l'oeil painting, creating an architectural illusion that merits close observation.
