The Porto Novo Fort is located in the town of Caniço, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, on the island of Madeira. It is situated in the Porto Novo area, more specifically on the right bank of the mouth of the Porto Novo stream. Its strategic position, elevated above the coast, offers a wide perspective over the vast Atlantic Ocean.
This location, once served by the old Caniço road, is now integrated into the coastal and urban landscape of the area. The surroundings are characterized by their proximity to the sea, allowing visitors to observe the coastline and the dynamics of the waters.
The construction of the Porto Novo Fort began in 1827, on the initiative of José Travassos Valdez, then governor and captain-general of Madeira and Porto Santo. Its main objective was to complement the island's coastal defense, controlling an access point considered strategic, which could facilitate the advance of enemy forces towards Funchal.
During the construction period, in 1828, the fort was damaged by an ammunition explosion, in the context of the island's capture by Miguelist troops. Despite the initial damage, its construction was later completed under the supervision of D. Álvaro da Costa de Sousa de Macedo, consolidating its function as a defensive point in a time of instability.
The Porto Novo Fort is a testament to 19th-century military architecture in Madeira, revealing the importance attributed to coastal protection. Although time has shaped its original structure, the remains of the fortification allow one to imagine its relevance as a defensive stronghold.
For visitors, the site offers a stunning view over the Atlantic. It is a privileged spot to appreciate the immensity of the sea, the coastal profile, and the natural beauty of the Caniço coastline, providing an environment conducive to landscape contemplation.
