The Convent of Mercy stands in the center of Santa Cruz, next to Rua do Calhau, in an area where cobbled streets delineate small green nooks. In its vicinity, the building benefits from its proximity to the sea and the Atlantic breeze, contrasting the white of its walls with the darker tone of the basalt slabs that frame the facade.
The initial work dates back to the first half of the 16th century, when the Brotherhood of Mercy decided to erect a hospital for the needy. Over the centuries, the space housed a hospital, pharmacy, and health center, always maintaining a mission of social and religious support to the local community.
The complex presents Mannerist traits of a hospital nature, identifiable in the rectangular plan and the simple, yet balanced volumes. Two portals stand out, flanked by balcony windows with iron and stone railings, as well as the Chapel of Saint Isabel, crowned by an original 16th-century Gothic portal.
In front of the convent, small lawns and potted plants create contemplative areas, while trees cast soft shadows on the pavement. The ensemble invites a slow pace, allowing for a detailed observation of the remnants of gilded woodwork on the main altar of the chapel and for absorbing the historical atmosphere of the place.
