The Chapel of Lamaceiros is situated in a serene and communal area, Lamaçeiros, which is part of the Lamaceiras area, in the municipality of Porto Moniz. This location allows visitors to find the chapel integrated into local life, offering a perspective on the tranquility of Madeiran settlements.
The history of the Chapel of Lamaceiros dates back to the 16th century, when it was erected. However, its roots are even deeper, as it is known that a primitive chapel existed in the same location, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception), founded as early as 1470 by Adão Ferreira. This fact underscores the long tradition of faith and community in the place.
Throughout time, the chapel faced challenges, such as the damage caused by the earthquake of 1748. Nevertheless, it has always been rehabilitated and preserved, which demonstrates its continuous importance to the inhabitants of the region. The successive recovery interventions attest to its resilience and dedication to maintaining this heritage.
Also known as the Chapel of Saint Peter, this temple houses an image of the saint it is named after. Interestingly, devotion to Nossa Senhora do Monte (Our Lady of the Mount) is also central, as she is considered its patron saint. This duality of cult figures enriches the symbolism of the place.
Annually, the chapel is the setting for important celebrations that attract the community. On June 29th, Saint Peter's day is celebrated, and on August 15th, a significant feast dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Monte takes place, sometimes referred to as the "Feast of the Seven Ladies," where the Virgin is evoked in various devotions. These festivities are moments of strong cultural and religious connection for the locality.
