The Chapel of Our Lady of Glory stands in a distinctive coastal area, in the locality of Calhau da Lapa, which is part of the Furnas area, in the municipality of Ribeira Brava. Its position is unique, being located on top of a seafront rock, which gives it a scenic setting and an expansive view over the coastline and the surrounding ocean.
The history of the Chapel of Our Lady of Glory began at the end of the 16th century, more precisely in 1599, when it was established. The authorship of its design is attributed to master Jerónimo Jorge, a relevant figure in the architecture of the time. The construction itself, in the 17th century, was undertaken by the nobleman Henrique Bettencourt Vasconcelos, a name linked to the chapel's original foundation. Over the centuries, the temple passed through different owners and administrators, such as the entailed estate holder Luís Correia in 1823. In the early 20th century, around 1920, the Countess of Torre Bela led a notable restoration of the building. More recently, in the 21st century, a Madeiran emigrant from the region itself contributed to its renovation, ensuring the continuity of this heritage.
The chapel reflects a Mannerist architectural model, adapted to its peculiar and isolated location. Although it follows the stylistic precepts of master Jerónimo Jorge and his son João Bartolomeu, the construction manifests a harmonious simplicity with the natural environment that surrounds it. On the exterior, its round arch portal, made of regional stonework, is particularly noteworthy. This element is framed by a projecting cornice and imposts, which, despite not featuring excessively elaborate ornamentation, give the facade a distinct and genuine presence.
Beyond its value as built heritage, the Chapel of Our Lady of Glory maintains a significant connection with the local community. This small temple is the center of continuous devotion to its patron saint, Our Lady of Glory. Annually, the celebration in honor of the patron saint still takes place, usually on the last weekend of August. This moment is a testament to the persistence of faith and tradition associated with this sacred place.
