Located in the town of Caniço, which belongs to the municipality of Santa Cruz, the Chapel Mãe de Deus is integrated into the urban area designated as Mãe de Deus.
Its position within the town's fabric allows for relatively direct access for those exploring this area of Caniço.
With origins dating back to 1536, the Chapel Mãe de Deus boasts almost five centuries of history. It is recognized as one of the oldest temples on the island of Madeira dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Its construction took place on an old property known as “Fazenda das Moças”, which connects this location to the rural history of the area where it is situated.
The chapel was built in the Manueline style, presenting an architecture described as sober and elegant. On the main facade, which has a gable finish, the presence of the Cross of Christ at the top stands out, as well as a circular rose window adorning the upper part, giving it a particular artistic detail.
Inside, the chapel has a longitudinal plan, with a single elevated nave. The ceiling is made of wood, while the chancel, the most sacred part of the temple, is covered by a vault.
A notable element inside is the tabernacle, ornamented with representations of the Chalice and the Eucharistic Host. These representations hold a symbolic meaning that refers to deep interpretations of religious mystery.
Due to its historical and architectural importance, the Chapel Mãe de Deus is classified as a Property of Public Interest. This recognition underscores its value as part of the region's cultural heritage.
