Situated in the locality of Camacha, part of the municipality of Santa Cruz, the Mother Church is present in the area known as Achada. It is a landmark in the urban area, easily identifiable for anyone travelling through the locality.
The construction of the Camacha Mother Church dates back to the late 18th century. This religious building holds an official classification as a Property of Public Interest, recognizing its heritage and historical value in the region and on the island of Madeira.
The church features a combination of architectural styles. Characteristic elements of the Baroque period are observed, blended with the sobriety and symmetry of Neoclassicism. This duality gives the building a distinctive appearance, typical of constructions from that era in Madeira, reflecting transitional artistic trends.
Upon entering the Mother Church, one finds a single central nave, which leads to various areas of interest. From here, access is gained to the side chapels, the baptismal font area, and the bell tower staircase. Above the main entrance is the choir loft.
The artistic elements are remarkable. Notable are altarpieces from different eras: one in Baroque style, associated with the Joanine period, and another with Neo-Baroque characteristics. The triumphal arch, which separates the nave from the main altar, is adorned with Neoclassical pattern tiles. On the nave ceiling, one can admire paintings dating from the early 20th century, contributing to the interior's atmosphere.
