The Chapel of Our Lady of Good Success is located in a serene and characteristic area of Lombo do Doutor, in the locality of Estrela, which belongs to the municipality of Calheta. Its position in this place offers a unique perspective of the surroundings, fitting into the local landscape.

Origins and Evolution

The history of this chapel dates back to the year 1683, when it was built by Lourenço da Costa. A stone, located beneath the cross at the main entrance, preserves this date, bearing witness to its deep roots. Over time, the structure underwent alterations, an example of which is the bell tower, which displays the date 1906, marking the period when expansion works were carried out, particularly in this area of the chapel.

Sacred Art and Devotion

Although modest in size, this chapel houses elements of artistic and spiritual value. Inside, one can contemplate a canvas dedicated to Our Lady of Good Success, as well as a beautiful image of the Virgin and Child, dating from the 18th century. This particular image is an object of deep devotion by the population, a feeling that is manifested, including, in offerings of gold. The faith surrounding Our Lady of Good Success is celebrated annually at the time of the feast, which takes place on the Sunday closest to September 15th.

Given its historical and cultural importance, the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Success is officially recognized as a Monument of Municipal Interest. This classification underscores its value as an integral part of the heritage of Calheta and the Island of Madeira, inviting contemplation of its legacy and uniqueness.
