Situated in the Matas area, in the vibrant town of Vila Baleira, Porto Santo's Old Pier extends over the tranquil waters of the Atlantic. Its position offers unobstructed views of the island's coastline and the vastness of the ocean, functioning as a natural extension of the urban landscape by the beach.
The history of the Old Pier dates back to 1929, the year its construction began. Over decades, this pier played a fundamental role in the island's life, serving as Porto Santo's main connection point with the outside world. It was here that passengers and all essential goods for the daily life of the population were embarked and disembarked, witnessing crucial moments of local development.
Currently, Porto Santo's Old Pier takes on a new life. Recognized as a significant monument, it ceased its port function to transform into a place dedicated to leisure and contemplation. It is a space that invites relaxed strolls, enjoying the sea breeze, and observing the clear waters that surround it. For many, it is also a preferred spot for diving and appreciating the transparency of the waters that bathe the nearby beach.
With an impressive length of 102 meters and a width of 8 meters, the Old Pier's structure rests on strategically placed pillars, giving it a robust presence over the sea. Its preservation has been ensured through rehabilitation works, guaranteeing that this historic and scenic element continues to be an integral and visible part of Porto Santo's natural and coastal beauty.
