Located in the parish of Arco da Calheta, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto (Our Lady of Loreto) is situated in a higher area known as Quinta do Vinhático. This mid-slope position gives it an isolated and peaceful atmosphere, typical of the Madeiran rural landscape. Surrounded by a small walled churchyard, it offers a point of serenity for visitors.
The history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto dates back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest in the region. It is believed that its initial construction was linked to the properties of prominent figures of the time. Over the centuries, the building underwent expansions and modifications, which is reflected in the diversity of architectural styles it presents. Its historical importance was recognized with its classification as a Public Interest Property.
The building is an interesting example of local architectural evolution, combining elements of the original Manueline style with later revivalist additions. A prominent feature is the wide galilé (a type of porch) that precedes the main entrance, a notable 20th-century addition. Inside, attention is captured by the beautiful alfarje ceiling, a wooden work painted with geometric motifs in shades of blue and white, representative of Mudejar art. The chapel also features a holy water font in carved marble and an altarpiece in the chancel with polychrome carving and a canvas dated from the 18th century.
A popular legend tells the story of the chapel's origin. It is said that an image of Our Lady mysteriously appeared in a certain place. The devout people interpreted the event as a divine sign and decided to build a temple there in Her honor. The legend recounts that, despite attempts to move the image to a location considered more suitable, it always returned to the original site of the apparition, indicating Her will for the chapel to be built precisely at that spot.
