The Vasco da Gama Tower rises in the Parque das Nações, in Lisbon, next to the north bank of the Tagus River. Its prominent position offers a distinct perspective on the capital and the vast river estuary, fitting into the modern landscape of this riverside area of the city.
Inaugurated for the 1998 World Exposition (Expo '98), this tower was conceived to honour the Portuguese Discoveries and Lisbon's connection to the sea. Its architectural design, by SOM and Profabril (with Nick Jacobs and Leonor Janeiro), is inspired by the shape of a caravel with a billowing sail, symbolizing the ships that once set sail from the Tagus towards new horizons. With a height of approximately 145 metres, it is recognized as the tallest building in Portugal, a remarkable landmark on the city's skyline.
At the top of the tower, a viewpoint offers a 360-degree panoramic view over Lisbon and the Tagus River. This space, which was once open-air, is now covered by a transparent dome, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery in all weather conditions. The viewpoint's windows are equipped with interactive elements that provide historical and geographical information about the points of interest visible, enriching the experience of observing the city from this elevated perspective.
