São Pedro Tower is located in Largo de São Rafael, in the heart of the historic Alfama district in Lisbon. Set within an old urban setting, surrounded by traditional buildings and narrow streets, the tower appears integrated into the city fabric, almost as a discreet yet historically rich element.
Its position follows the line of the former city walls, in an elevated area close to old internal routes. The surroundings still reveal traces of the defensive structure that once protected this part of the city.
This tower was part of the Moorish walls of Lisbon, a defensive system dating back to the Islamic period of the city. Later incorporated and reinforced over time, it retained a strategic role in overseeing and protecting Alfama.
Connected to the former São Pedro Gate, it functioned as a control point for entry into the city. Its proximity to a natural spring also suggests its importance in protecting essential resources such as water supply.
São Pedro Tower has a solid, vertical structure typical of medieval defensive constructions. Although now integrated into later buildings, its original form and sturdy character can still be recognised.
Historical references indicate that the tower may have been hollow inside, and used as a place of confinement. During the 14th and 15th centuries, it is believed to have served as a prison, reinforcing its multifunctional role within the urban structure.
Today, the tower stands as one of the few visible remnants of Lisbon’s ancient walls. It represents a quiet testimony to the city’s evolution, from medieval times to the present day.
More than just an architectural feature, São Pedro Tower carries strong symbolic meaning, linked to defence, territorial control, and the many stories that unfolded there over the centuries.
