The Church of São João Baptista is located in the town of São João da Talha, in the municipality of Loures, within the district of Lisbon. It is specifically found in the area known as Vale de Figueira, in an environment that reflects the life and history of this community, offering a perspective of its urban and cultural surroundings.
The origins of the Church of São João Baptista essentially date back to the 16th century, a period of significant religious construction in Portugal. Over the centuries, and particularly after the 1755 earthquake that profoundly affected the Lisbon region, the building underwent interventions and reconstructions. These actions contributed to its current appearance, marked by an architectural simplicity that, however, does not detract from its historical importance and its continued role in the community.
Inside the church, the structural simplicity harmoniously contrasts with the richness of its artistic details. One of the main highlights is found in the chancel, where panels of historic azulejos can be observed, notable for their two distinct styles, both dating from the 17th century. These tiles are a testament to the decorative mastery of the era and lend a unique atmosphere to the space.
Besides the azulejos, other elements enrich the visit, such as the stone coats of arms that adorn the interior, displaying a Renaissance touch. These details, along with the polychromy of the tiles, reveal the attention given to ornamentation and the fusion of different stylistic periods that characterize this place of worship.
