The Museum is housed in the Azurara Palace, located in the historic Alfama district, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, Lisbon.
The space recreates the typical atmosphere of an aristocratic residence of the 18th century in Portugal.
It has one of the most important and consistent collections of Applied Arts in Portugal, with furniture from the 16th to the 20th centuries, Portuguese and foreign painting from the 18th century, goldsmithery, porcelain, faience, oriental textiles, Arraiolos carpets and Baroque and Neoclassical tiles.
The museum is part of the homonymous foundation, created in 1953, with the aim of preserving Portuguese decorative arts and traditional crafts, as well as providing specialized training in these areas.
The Azurara Palace, where the museum is located, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1993.
The museum has several themed rooms, such as the Noble Hall, the Nativity Scene Room, the Portuguese Chair Center, among others, which show different aspects of the life and decorative style of the 18th century.
In addition to the museum, it is possible to visit the arts and crafts and conservation and restoration workshops, located in Largo das Portas do Sol, which are open to the public every day, except on Tuesdays and on specific holidays (Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and May 1st).
