Carmo Lift or Santa Justa Lift

Category: Civil Architecture > Elevator

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Santa Maria Maior

Location

The Carmo Lift, better known as the Santa Justa Lift, is located in the historic heart of Lisbon. Its imposing structure connects the lower part of the city, the Baixa Pombalina, to the higher area of Carmo and Chiado. From its base, it allows pedestrian access to one of the most emblematic streets of the Baixa, while its upper platform offers a privileged perspective of the surrounding urban fabric, with views of the city's rooftops and the Tagus estuary.

History and Conception

Inaugurated in 1902, the Santa Justa Lift was conceived as an innovative public transport solution to overcome Lisbon's steep topography. Its construction represented a milestone in engineering and in the urban landscape of the Portuguese capital at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The project was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a Portuguese engineer who left his mark on several other transport works in the city, and who stood out for his mastery in the use of iron.

Architecture and Structure

This monument stands out for its unique architecture, which combines elements of Neo-Gothic style with the functionality of an iron structure. Its robust wrought-iron construction, adorned with lacework and decorative details, is a remarkable expression of the iron architecture of the era. The columns, arches, and trusses that make up its main tower reveal refined technique and aesthetic care that make it a work of industrial art. Inside, there are two wooden cabins, with brass finishes, that retain their original charm.

Scenic Value

In addition to its historical and architectural relevance, the Santa Justa Lift offers one of Lisbon's most scenic experiences. The upper platform, accessible via a walkway from the Lift, provides an exceptional viewpoint. From there, it is possible to contemplate a panoramic view that encompasses a large part of the Baixa, São Jorge Castle, Rossio Square, and the majesty of the Tagus River. The landscape transforms throughout the day, offering different perspectives of the light on the city.
