The Freixal Alto Redoubt is located in Fanhões, a locality in the municipality of Loures, within the Bairro das Funcheiras area. Its elevated position, at approximately 305 meters above sea level on a limestone hill, offers a comprehensive perspective over the Freixal gorge. This strategic location allowed for easy visual communication with other defensive structures of the era.
This redoubt is one of the elements that make up the Lines of Torres Vedras, a remarkable defensive system built between 1809 and 1810. Designed to protect the capital, Lisbon, from French invasions during the Peninsular War, the Freixal Alto Redoubt was part of the second line of fortifications. Its construction was supervised by British and Portuguese engineers, with the participation of local workers and farmers.
Designed to house a garrison of approximately 300 soldiers and some artillery pieces, the Freixal Alto Redoubt features an irregular pentagonal plan. Its defensive structure included an artificial escarpment, reinforced with limestone walls, and a dry ditch, which would have been complemented by palisades. These architectural elements reflect the military engineering of the early 19th century, conceived to withstand attacks and control the surrounding terrain.
Despite its robustness and its strategic role within the vast complex of the Lines of Torres Vedras, the Freixal Alto Redoubt never witnessed direct combat. The effectiveness of the first lines of defense proved sufficient to repel the French forces, making the use of this point in battle unnecessary. The site has undergone restoration work, which contributes to preserving the memory and importance of this notable military engineering work in Portugal's history.
