Located in the parish of Benfica, Silva Porto Park is an extensive green space in the heart of this Lisbon neighbourhood. Its presence offers a more natural and tranquil environment in the surrounding urban area, serving as a local landmark and an important green lung for the Benfica area.
The park's history dates back to 1880, when João Carlos Ulrich had a grove planted to beautify the Feteira Palace, which he owned. Later, the property was acquired by César Augusto de Figueiredo, who donated it to the Lisbon City Council in the early 20th century, with the express condition that it be made accessible to all citizens.
The park was named in honour of the painter António da Silva Porto, whose bust stands near one of the main entrances, marking the space's connection to this cultural figure. It is also worth noting that some of the iron gates providing access to the park have their own history, originating from the old Portas de São Sebastião da Pedreira.
With an approximate area of five hectares, Silva Porto Park hosts a remarkable diversity of flora, with about 22 distinct types of shrubs and trees identified. Species such as Buçaco cedar, eucalyptus, cypress, various types of pine trees (Aleppo and stone pines), oak, and cork oak are well-represented, creating varied environments throughout the park.
Wildlife in the park is most visible in its birds, including serins and goldfinches, and, interestingly, the presence of turtle doves, which are not common in dense urban contexts. It is also possible to observe squirrels, which add movement and colour to the natural environment.
One of the most distinctive elements of the park is its historic kiosk. Built in 1916, this building follows a 1913 design by architect José Alexandre Soares and is particularly notable for its Art Nouveau tile panels.
The tiles adorning the kiosk are the work of painter José António Jorge Pinto, one of the names associated with the Art Nouveau style in Portugal. The panels depict various themes, such as the games of chance "She loves me not," "She loves me," "Much," "Little," and "Not at all," as well as scenes alluding to "The Wood" and "The Hunt," giving the site an artistic and historical touch.
With its five hectares, the park offers various areas to enjoy the outdoors. The central lake constitutes a serene point of interest, reflecting the green surroundings and providing a tranquil environment for a stroll. There are designated picnic areas, allowing visitors to settle comfortably for an informal meal surrounded by nature.
Silva Porto Park is a true refuge in the city, a spacious area where one can stroll, relax, and observe nature. It also features a playground, making it a pleasant spot for families with children looking for a safe place to play outdoors.
