Laudato Si Park

Category: Nature > Park

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Carnide

Location

Located in the parish of Carnide, in Lisbon, Parque Laudato Si is integrated into the historic complex of the Convento da Luz. It is situated in an urban area of the city, offering a tranquil and accessible refuge amidst the urban environment.

A Legacy and Its Inspiration

This park occupies what was once the secular garden of a former neoclassical palace, built in 1878. The space was acquired by Franciscan friars in 1939, and in December 2022, it was adapted to bring Parque Laudato Si to life. Its name and concept are inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical of the same name, which reflects on the importance of caring for the environment and human relationships. There is also a clear connection to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, particularly through his "Canticle of the Creatures," which celebrates the beauty of nature.

Oasis of Serenity

Known as a place of tranquility in the hustle and bustle of Lisbon, the park provides an environment conducive to rest and reflection. It is an invitation to slow down the pace of daily life, to attune oneself to what surrounds us, and to practice self-care. The space offers an experience of stillness and connection, where mindfulness becomes fundamental.

Natural and Contemplative Elements

Within the park, visitors will find a set of elements that enrich the experience. Centennial trees provide shade and a cool environment. There is a small lake, and a grotto housing an image of Our Lady, adding a touch of devotion. Benches strategically placed in nooks invite moments of reading or meditation. Plaques with quotes from the encyclical Laudato Si are distributed throughout the space, offering lines of thought for those seeking a moment of introspection.

An Inclusive Space

Although with a clear Franciscan inspiration, Parque Laudato Si was conceived as a space of openness and dialogue. Its proposal goes beyond a purely religious perspective, inviting people of different beliefs, or none, to enjoy a moment of introspection and connection. It is a place where the sharing of diverse spiritual and cultural sensitivities is valued.
