Eduardo VII Park

Category: Nature > Park

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Avenidas Novas

Location

This emblematic park is centrally located in Lisbon, within the Avenidas Novas area. It occupies a vast expanse of land that extends north from Praça Marquês de Pombal, serving as a large green space in the heart of the city and marking the upper end of Avenida da Liberdade.

Its elevated position offers interesting perspectives on the urban fabric stretching towards the Tagus River, providing a privileged vantage point.

Origin and Conception

The space known today as Parque Eduardo VII originated from the old Parque da Liberdade. Its current name, Parque Eduardo VII de Inglaterra (Edward VII Park of England), was attributed in 1903 to honor the visit to Lisbon of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, a gesture that reinforced the long-standing alliance between the two countries.

The distinctive configuration of the park, with its geometric flowerbeds and well-defined avenues, is the result of a project elaborated by landscape architect Francisco Keil do Amaral in the mid-20th century. The park was designed to provide the city with a recreational and leisure space in the center, occupying the site of a former quarry and visually extending the capital's main avenue.

Structure and Environment

The park's design is marked by a large central lawn strip that gently slopes down the hill, flanked by wide pedestrian walkways made of Portuguese calçada. These walkways divide the park into two lateral zones, filled with green and wooded areas that invite a peaceful stroll and offer shade on warmer days. This formal organization contrasts with other more natural environments found within the park.

The Great City View

At the northern and highest point of the park, there is a viewpoint offering a wide and characteristic view over a part of Lisbon. From here, it is possible to contemplate the arrangement of the park's flowerbeds, observe the imposing statue of Marquês de Pombal, and follow the axis of Avenida da Liberdade until the Tagus estuary is reached. On days of good visibility, the landscape extends beyond the river, revealing the south bank. It is also at this point that a large Portuguese flag can be seen.

Botanical Oasis: The Greenhouses

In one of the park's corners lies a set of greenhouses that constitute a true winter garden. The most well-known is the Estufa Fria (Cold Greenhouse), which houses a wide variety of plants from mild climates, traversed by water courses, small waterfalls, and lakes, creating a humid and tranquil environment among grottoes and pedestrian paths. Alongside it, the Estufa Quente (Hot Greenhouse), with a glass roof, maintains ideal conditions for tropical species. There is also the Estufa Doce (Sweet Greenhouse), dedicated to cacti and succulents. These spaces offer a fascinating journey through the plant world without leaving the city.

The Historic Pavilion

On the eastern side of the park, the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes stands out. This building was originally constructed for the International Exhibition of 1922, held in Rio de Janeiro, and later reassembled on this site. It received its current name in honor of the Portuguese athlete Carlos Lopes, Olympic marathon champion. The pavilion is notable for its architecture and the tile panels that adorn its facades and interior, depicting significant moments in Portuguese history.

Other Elements of the Park

Near the viewpoint is the Jardim Amália Rodrigues, an area dedicated to the memory of the acclaimed Portuguese fado singer. This garden includes a circular lake and a sculpture. In the vicinity, the Monumento ao 25 de Abril (Monument to April 25th) was erected, a sculptural work that evokes the Carnation Revolution of 1974. For families with children, the park offers a recreation area with various equipment, providing a safe and fun space for the little ones.
