District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > São Bento

Location

Palácio Alarcão stands in the parish of São Bento, a point in Lisbon integrated into the urban fabric that extends to the vicinity of the historic Bairro Alto. This building marks the confluence of streets such as Boavista, Gaivotas, and Fernandes Tomás, revealing its discreet but significant presence in the heart of the city.

Its location in the Portuguese capital allows for immersion in local life, with its surroundings characterized by traditional architecture and a dynamic urban environment, typical of Lisbon's historic areas.

Historical Legacy and Nobility

The history of Palácio Alarcão dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, although its genesis may have even older roots, possibly in the 16th century. This building was initially a noble residence, witnessing significant events in Portuguese history.

One of the most fascinating narratives linked to the palace concerns the Restoration of Independence in 1640. It is said that the then owner, D. João Soares de Alarcão, a prominent figure of the time, was involved in a conspiracy against the newly acclaimed D. João IV. Popular tradition states that secret meetings of conspirators took place in the palace's attic, a detail that adds a veil of mystery to its heritage. After the discovery of the conspiracy, the palace was confiscated, although later returned to the family, going through a series of disputes and transactions that reflect the turbulence of those times.

Architectural Features

With a rectangular plan, Palácio Alarcão reflects the residential architecture of its era, although it has undergone adaptations over the centuries. Its facade, especially facing Rua da Boavista and Rua das Gaivotas, features bay windows and breast windows, revealing the influence of restorations carried out in the 19th century.

A particularly noteworthy element is the 17th-century gate located at the corner of Rua das Gaivotas and Rua Fernandes Tomás. This robust portal, with its thick columns and arched lintel, is a striking example of stonework from the period and lends a unique identity to the building. More recently, the facade at number 186 Rua da Boavista features a curious and creative advertising tile panel, a visual detail that enriches the building's perception in the urban context.

An Evolution Through Time

Throughout its existence, Palácio Alarcão has adapted to different functions, reflecting the city's needs and transformations. From a noble single-family residence, the palace served, in the 20th century, as an educational establishment, housing Liceu Castilho and, later, a primary school.

Today, the building continues to be an integral part of Lisbon's life. While retaining its historic facade, the interior has undergone renovations to accommodate its current functions, including spaces dedicated to cultural projects, which ensure the continuity of its relevance in the social and artistic fabric of the capital.
