Location

Situated in the historic center of Alenquer, the museum occupies a building integrated into the village's houses. The entrance opens onto an interior with varying levels, featuring long corridors and small balconies that allow viewing the rooms from different angles.

Outside, there is a small courtyard with vegetation and blue and white tile panels. One of them displays an excerpt from Camões, adding a literary touch to the environment before entering the galleries.

Origin and Trajectory

The space was established in 1992 as a tribute to the figurative painter João Mário Ayres d’Oliveira (1932-2025), who made Alenquer the center of his life and work. His training at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and his travels throughout Europe marked the artist's perspective, evident in the many urban and rural landscapes painted in oil.

Besides the core dedicated to his career, the museum expanded through donations and partnerships, gathering works by other contemporary authors. The collection allows one to follow decades of figurative painting in Portugal, complemented by drawings and sculptures.

Collections and Themes

The rooms present hundreds of pieces. The biographical nucleus brings together early drawings and studies, while another wing displays works from his maturity, featuring the master's characteristic technique and style. There is also a space with works by artists who were his friends and a set of canvases painted during European travels. During certain times of the year, a thematic nucleus around nativity scenes is opened.

Among the exhibited works are portraits, seascapes, and street scenes, alongside small sculptures and a piece by Salvador Dalí. The tour is organized clearly and annotated, which facilitates the reading of series and the comparison between authors.

Aesthetics and Atmosphere

The interior combines white walls with tiled flooring, creating a luminous setting. The golden frames and directed track lighting highlight textures and brushstrokes. At transition points, display cases exhibit sculptures and small pieces; a light-colored bust stands out near one of them.

The building's design, with mezzanines and stairs, invites viewing the paintings at eye level and also in perspective. It is a silent and well-kept space, ideal for appreciating details of color and light in the landscapes and portraits.
