The Lourinhã Museum is located in the center of Lourinhã village, a location that integrates it into the urban dynamic and makes it an easily accessible point for those exploring the region.
This museum is recognized worldwide for its exceptional collection of dinosaur fossils. Visitors have the opportunity to observe scientifically significant discoveries from the Upper Jurassic period, found in the region.
Among the most notable finds are the oldest dinosaur embryos known globally, along with an impressive fossilized nest containing over a hundred eggs. It is also possible to see remains of dinosaurs such as the Lourinhanosaurus antunesi, a predator that inhabited these lands, and various footprints that mark their prehistoric presence.
In addition to its remarkable paleontological heritage, the Lourinhã Museum is also dedicated to safeguarding human history and local traditions. Its collections of archaeology and ethnology offer a journey through the cultural evolution and customs of the communities that lived in Lourinhã and its surroundings, from prehistoric times to the contemporary era. This collection allows for an understanding of the richness and diversity of the human legacy in the region.
The Lourinhã Museum represents an important hub for research and knowledge dissemination. Founded in 1984 by a group of enthusiastic citizens, GEAL (Grupo de Etnologia e Arqueologia da Lourinhã, Group of Ethnology and Archaeology of Lourinhã), the institution remains active in the discovery, study, and preservation of the vast natural and cultural heritage. Its vocation focuses on deepening the understanding of the region's geological and human past, sharing these discoveries with all who visit.
