Quinta Alegre, also known as Palácio do Marquês do Alegrete, is located in Lisbon, in an area historically marked by the presence of old leisure estates. Its placement reflects the choice of pleasant locations for noble residences outside the dense urban center, yet still accessible, allowing for the enjoyment of privileged contact with nature and ample leisure spaces. It integrates into the network of stately properties that defined the expansion and ambiance of the Portuguese capital throughout the centuries.
This remarkable architectural and landscape ensemble is a testament to the opulence and taste of the Portuguese nobility of the 18th century. Built around the first half of the 18th century for D. João de Sousa, the 3rd Marquis of Alegrete, the property was conceived as a leisure estate, a refuge from urban life. Over the centuries, Quinta Alegre underwent various adaptations and was enriched with new details, but it preserves its essence and historical value, reflecting the lifestyle and aesthetic panorama of an era.
The Palácio do Marquês do Alegrete exhibits elegant architecture, with characteristic features of the period in which it was built, where influences of Baroque and Rococo styles can be observed in the harmony of its facades and the organization of its volumes. The main building, with a complex plan, includes various articulated bodies, giving it an imposing presence. Although it has undergone interventions and remodelling over time, its original design remains recognizable, standing out for the sobriety and distinction of its lines, which reveal the mastery of the builders of the era.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Quinta Alegre are its gardens, which remarkably complement the palace. Designed with formal elements, they typically include carefully designed flowerbeds, avenues, and secluded spots that invite strolling and contemplation. These green spaces are frequently adorned with classical statuary, fountains, and, particularly in Portugal, with rich tile panels. The tiles, with their geometric patterns or figurative scenes, not only embellish the garden walls and benches but also contribute to the narrative of the place and to the creation of environments of great delicacy and color, constituting one of the most important decorative elements of the entire ensemble.
