Location

The "Book" is located in the urban center of Azambuja, next to Rua José Ramos Vides, in a small square surrounded by residential buildings and local commerce. The space is open and paved with Portuguese pavement, creating a welcoming atmosphere that invites a brief pause during a walk through the town. The presence of public lighting and benches lends it a tranquil and community-oriented character.

This spot marks one of the most central areas of Azambuja, easily recognized by the light-colored stone wall and the harmonious arrangement of its marble sculptures and elements, which contrast with the surrounding houses.

Meaning and Tribute

The monument, locally known as the Livro (Book), pays tribute to Adriano Moreira Carreira, Mayor of Azambuja between 1954 and 1962. The sculpture features a bust placed on a pedestal, flanked by a background wall with an inscription dedicated to the “good and devoted man”. On the ground, two large marble plaques opened in the shape of a book symbolize the recording of memory and the public tribute to his contribution to the municipality.

More than just a monument, the “Book” reflects the community's recognition of a figure who left his mark on local history, evoking the value of public service and dedication to the land.

Atmosphere and Setting

The ensemble combines sobriety and harmony, standing out for the clarity of its lines and the use of noble materials such as marble and stone. Its form evokes a space for contemplation, where silence and simplicity enhance the symbolic meaning of the tribute. At night, the soft lighting highlights the relief of the bust and the inscriptions, creating a serene atmosphere in the heart of the town.

It is a place that combines memory and identity, functioning as a meeting point between past and present, where the visitor can appreciate the human and civic dimension that defines Azambuja.
