Lisbon Sports Club

Category: Culture and Entertainment > Golf Course

District: Lisboa > Sintra > Belas > Casal da Carregueira

Location

Located in Casal da Carregueira, in Belas, Sintra municipality, the club occupies a wooded valley on the flank of Serra da Carregueira. A short distance from Lisbon – just over 20 km – it combines the serenity of the mountains with the protected landscape that surrounds it.

There are no housing developments in the vicinity: the course appears isolated among pine trees, cork oaks, and other autochthonous species, offering a continuous green setting, marked by the watercourse that accompanies almost all the holes.

Origin and History

The roots of the Lisbon Sports Club date back to 1861, when British enthusiasts created the then Lisbon Cricket Club. The natural evolution of the sport led to the introduction of golf, and in 1922, the name became Lisbon Sports Club. The 18-hole course in Belas was inaugurated in 1964, becoming the second oldest continuously operating in the country.

Over the years, the club has maintained management by its own members, preserving a family spirit and a British heritage visible in the organization of historic competitions, such as the Lisbon Cup (contested since 1917).

Course and Design

With 18 holes, Par 69, and a length of 5,261 meters, the layout follows the model of Scottish mountain courses: narrow fairways, greens protected by strategic bunkers, and altitude variations that demand precision. Holes 1, 3, and 18 have gained fame for their combination of beauty and challenge.

Hole 1, a Par 3 of 169 meters, features tees ten meters above the green, surrounded by four bunkers and a water hazard on the right. Hole 3, also a Par 3 but 176 meters long, crosses a water line halfway down the fairway, bordered by lush vegetation. Hole 18 is the final test: generous length and a winding water hazard leading to the green, flanked by two bunkers.

Natural Environment

The constant presence of the stream ensures lush fairways for a large part of the year and attracts wildlife – it is common to see partridges, rabbits, and various bird species. The surrounding forest filters out the city sounds, creating a silent environment interrupted only by chirping or the impact of the ball.

The green tones of the mountains change with the seasons, offering photographic panoramas at any time. The absence of neighboring constructions reinforces the feeling of a natural refuge, rare in such close proximity to the capital.

Atmosphere and Experience

Inside the clubhouse, the traditional decoration recalls the club's long history, while outside, the course leads to a challenging walk between hills and ravines. Each hole presents a distinct scenery, ensuring variety and surprise throughout the game.

The welcoming atmosphere reflects the community character of its members, who continue to manage the space on a non-profit basis, keeping alive the connection between sport, conviviality, and respect for nature.
