The Mexican Garden is located inside the Monserrate Park, in Sintra, situated in one of the sunniest and driest areas of the park's main valley. This space stands out for its strong luminosity and vegetation with an arid appearance, contrasting with the humid exuberance of the remaining areas of the historic garden.
The natural setting is marked by terraces, winding paths, and stone walls that shape the landscape, with the Monserrate Palace appearing in the distance as a backdrop. The environment evokes hot and desert regions, creating a visually surprising scene in the heart of the Sintra mountains.
The Mexican Garden was conceived during the 19th century, in the context of the grand landscape project of Francis Cook, then owner of the Monserrate estate. The establishment of this garden involved a profound transformation of the terrain: the old watercourse of the valley was diverted, terraces were created, and an elaborate system for collecting and transporting water was implemented, integrating existing tanks.
Spanning about five thousand square meters, the space was designed to accommodate species adapted to hot and dry climates, making it one of the most distinct thematic areas of the park. The design and engineering applied reveal the care taken to reconcile aesthetics and functionality, ensuring the survival of the plants in a very particular microclimate.
Among the predominant species are palms, yuccas, nolina, agaves, and cycads, plants of tropical and desert origin that lend the space an almost sculptural appearance. The agaves, with their long, pointed leaves, dominate the scenery, while cacti and succulents add texture and variety to the edges of the paths.
The landscape is punctuated by contrasting colors and shapes, especially during flowering, when shades of red and orange stand out against the grayish-green foliage. The ensemble conveys a sensation of warmth and luminosity, evoking the atmosphere of the Mexican deserts that gave it its name.
The route through the Mexican Garden reveals a succession of carefully planned perspectives. Among the stones and walls structuring the terrain, the visitor finds corners that alternate between shade and light, creating a visual and sensory experience distinct from the other areas of the park.
At the bottom of the valley, the lake introduced in the place of the old dam marks the boundary of the garden and adds a point of tranquility and reflection. This contrast between the arid environment and the presence of water reflects the poetic balance characteristic of Monserrate, where nature and landscape art unite harmoniously.
