The São Jorge Castle Garden is integrated into the Castle's historic complex, located at the top of a hill in Lisbon. It lies within the walls of the ancient citadel, offering an elevated position that dominates the surrounding landscape. It is a space discovered when exploring the castle's interior, providing a tranquil environment and expansive views over the city and the Tagus River.
This garden was designed to harmonize with the historical character of the site, featuring a selection of plant species that predominate in the Portuguese forest. Among the flora that can be observed here are large stone pines, cork oaks, and carob trees. The presence of fruit trees in this space is a reference and tribute to the old orchard that once existed near the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, which occupied this area within the castle walls.
Contrary to what might be thought, the current form of this garden is not as ancient as the castle. It was conceived in the mid-20th century as a "landscape-garden," seeking to create a space that felt natural and in harmony with the history and military architecture. The atmosphere is one of serenity, inviting calm strolls along its stone paths and moments of rest on benches located next to the walls. It is a tranquil refuge in the heart of the historic area.
Benefiting from its location at the highest point of the hill, the garden also serves as a magnificent viewpoint. From here, the view is vast and impressive, extending over the houses cascading down Lisbon's slopes, the extensive Tagus River estuary, and the south bank. It is a privileged spot to observe the city's layout and the river's grandeur. Some old cannons, positioned along the wall, add a historical context to the contemplation of the landscape.
