Ajuda Botanical Garden

Category: Nature > Botanical Garden

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Ajuda

Location

Situated in the Ajuda district of Lisbon, this historic garden occupies a space on the hillside that slopes down towards the Tagus River. Its position within the urban area allows it to integrate into the local landscape, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy views of the surrounding area, as well as parts of the city and the river.

Historical Origin

The Ajuda Botanical Garden has a rich history, dating back to 1768. It is recognized as the first botanical garden created in Portugal, initiated by King D. José I. It was designed by the Italian botanist Domenico Vandelli, with the initial purpose of serving as a space for study and training for the princes of the time. Over time, its vocation expanded, becoming a place dedicated to the collection, study, and conservation of a vast range of plant species from various parts of the world, including Portuguese overseas territories.

Design and Landscape Architecture

The conception of this garden is structured in stepped terraces, taking advantage of the natural slope of the terrain. The space is organized into two main levels, connected by lateral and central staircases. The overall design evokes Renaissance models in its tiered organization, although certain elements, such as the central fountain and the details of the staircases, reveal distinctly Baroque influences. The composition harmoniously integrates sculpted stone, water present in fountains and lakes, and the diversity of plants.

The lower level presents a more formal layout, characteristic of a recreational garden, with extensive and well-maintained boxwood hedges that draw complex geometric patterns around the flowerbeds. The upper level is more directly dedicated to the botanical collections, exhibiting a different organization that invites the discovery of species.

Botanical Collections and Notable Features

The garden houses a diverse collection of plants, reflecting the history of Portuguese botanical expeditions. Among the species present are examples of tropical trees. The notable boxwood hedges on the lower terrace are one of the garden's most striking visual elements. In addition to the general collections, there is a special area called "Jardim dos Aromas" (Aroma Garden), designed to be explored through smell and touch, featuring aromatic and medicinal plants in raised beds, facilitating access, especially for visitors with visual impairments.

A Space for Contemplation

This garden offers a tranquil and serene refuge within the urban environment of Lisbon. It is a suitable place for a calm and relaxing stroll, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the landscape design, the diversity of plants, and the quietness of the environment. Its elevated location on the hillside provides pleasant moments to contemplate the surrounding landscape and views over the Tagus River.
