The Jardim 9 de Abril (April 9th Garden) is located in the Santos-o-Velho area of Lisbon, in an elevated position overlooking the riverside. It is situated on a rocky formation which gives it a peculiar topography.
This privileged location integrates the garden into the Miradouro da Rocha do Conde de Óbidos (Count of Óbidos' Rock Viewpoint), providing a vast and open view of the Tagus River and the south bank, a characteristic panorama of this part of the city.
This green space is known by several names, each reflecting a part of its history. The official designation, Jardim 9 de Abril, pays homage to the participation of Portuguese troops in World War I, commemorating a significant confrontation in 1918 that marked the country's military history.
Other popular names, such as Jardim das Albertas and Jardim da Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, refer to elements of the surroundings and the site itself. "Albertas" is linked to the existence of an old convent of Carmelite nuns located nearby, while "Rocha do Conde de Óbidos" derives from the rocky hill where the garden was established.
The garden is laid out on a gentle slope, with paths inviting a peaceful stroll. It is a space that, despite not being vast, offers pleasant nooks for resting and observing the landscape.
The seating areas, sometimes protected by dense foliage that creates a kind of natural canopy, are ideal for enjoying the view. The perspective over the Tagus includes not only the vastness of the river and the opposite bank, but also elements of port activity, offering an authentic insight into Lisbon's riverside dynamics.
Within the garden, there are points of interest that tell a little more about the history and culture linked to the site. A memorial pays homage to José António Marques, a relevant figure for the founding of the Portuguese Red Cross.
There is also a plaque dedicated to the poet Teixeira de Pascoaes, which includes verses from his work. These elements add a dimension of memory and tribute to the garden's natural environment.
