The Church of Coutada is located in the urbanization of Coutada, an area belonging to the town of São Pedro da Cadeira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Its position offers a peaceful environment, characteristic of an area that combines residential living with proximity to the surrounding nature, inviting a serene and cultural visit.
This religious temple has its roots in the late 17th century, with the date of 1678 engraved on the stone of the main facade, attesting to its initial construction. Its architecture reflects the period of its construction, presenting the characteristic lines and proportions of the era.
Throughout the 19th century, the church underwent significant interventions that enriched its aesthetics. Notable is the beautiful stone-carved cross, dated 1872 and placed above the large window on the facade. The pulpit, with the date 1878 at its base, was also restored and received new paint, contributing to the renovation of the interior space. More recently, in the summer of 1987, a fire incident led to the need for new restoration works, which helped preserve the integrity of this heritage.
One of the most captivating details of the church is the sundial, which adorns the right corner of the facade. Dated 1747, this element is, with great probability, a creation of the Italian João António de Pádua, adding a touch of art and functionality to the exterior face of the building.
Inside, the temple once housed a valuable collection of sacred images. Although many of these pieces are no longer on display, one remains in its original location: the image of the Holy Trinity. This imposing piece, carved in stone in the 16th century, possesses remarkable artistic value and is one of the highlights of the local heritage.
The exterior space, or churchyard, is enhanced by the imposing presence of two ash trees. One of these arboreal specimens is notably old, lending the environment a character of longevity and serenity, inviting contemplation and rest before or after visiting the temple's interior.
