The Malveira Fort is located in the town of Malveira, belonging to the municipality of Mafra, in the district of Lisbon. Situated at an altitude of 266 meters, it occupies a high and dominant position over the Baralhas valley. This strategic location allowed for the control of an essential communication node at the time, where the roads connecting Mafra and Torres Vedras to the capital intersected.
Erected in 1809, the Malveira Fort is a fundamental piece of the defensive system known as the Lines of Torres Vedras. This set of fortifications was built to protect Lisbon from French invasions during the Peninsular War. Initially known as the Valtijães Redoubt, and also as the Feira Fort, its function was to deter enemy advance along one of the main access routes to the capital. It was garrisoned by about 350 men of the Portuguese militias and equipped with artillery pieces, capable of reaching targets at a considerable distance.
The Malveira Fort features an interesting star-shaped polygonal plan, with seven points, a common characteristic in fortifications of the period. It was protected by a deep moat, about four meters deep, excavated directly into the surrounding rock. Inside, the six gun emplacements stand out, strategically oriented towards the road connecting Malveira to Lisbon, and the entrance area, defended by robust L-shaped traverses. In the center is the powder magazine, a rectangular building constructed of stone masonry, with a reconstructed wooden roof, and reinforced by compacted layers of earth for greater protection.
Today, the Malveira Fort transcends its original military function, establishing itself as a historical-cultural landmark and a point of interest for visitors to the region. Its recovery allowed for its reopening to the public, integrating it into the Historical Route of the Lines of Torres, a route that invites discovery of the vast defensive legacy left by this conflict. The alternative name, Forte da Feira, refers to local history, linked to the old cattle fair established by D. Maria I, which took place nearby, adding a layer of curiosity to its identity.
