Located in the Estrela parish in Lisbon, this former convent has a central location that makes it easy to visit.
Since 1943, the building has been considered a Property of Public Interest, recognized for its historical and architectural importance.
Founded in 1657, the convent began with the construction of a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Solitude. The construction of the convent itself began soon after, but was interrupted by the 1755 earthquake and was never fully completed.
The convent was created for the Hospitaller Order of the Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives, a congregation dedicated to the rescue of Christian captives from the Arab slave trade.
In 1910, the convent was transformed into an asylum, ending its religious activities. Currently, the building houses the Hydrographic Institute, which deals with matters related to hydrography.
In the 1940s, the building underwent a restoration process to preserve its structure and history.
