Situated on one of Lisbon's western hills, in the historic Lapa district, the Estrela Basilica benefits from an elevated position.
This location allows the building to stand out in the city's urban landscape, being visible from various points due to its scale and architectural presence.
The origin of this building dates back to a promise made by Queen Maria I and her consort, King Peter III.
Construction of the Basilica began in 1779 and was completed in 1790, with the work directed by architects trained at the School of Mafra.
The Estrela Basilica exhibits a combination of styles, featuring characteristics of both Late Baroque and Neoclassical architecture.
The main facade is marked by two twin towers and a collection of sculptures of saints and allegorical figures, attributed to the work of master Joaquim Machado de Castro.
Inside, grey, pink, and yellow marbles predominate, lending a particular ambiance to the space, complemented by the light that streams through its large dome.
Upon entering the Basilica, visitors are greeted by a space of remarkable artistic expression. The walls are adorned with paintings by Pompeo Batoni, which contribute to the interior's visual impact.
A central element is the tomb of Queen Maria I, the monarch responsible for its foundation, located in the right transept.
In the same space, one can observe the Nativity Scene by Machado de Castro, a large-scale and detailed creation. Composed of over five hundred cork and terracotta figures, this nativity scene is distinguished by its scale and richness of detail.
The Estrela Basilica houses two important historical instruments: its organs.
Dating from 1789 and 1791, both were built by António Xavier Machado e Cerveira, a renowned organ builder of his time.
The choir organ underwent restoration in 1998, a process that contributed to the preservation of its sonority and heritage value.
