The Hermitage of São Saturnino stands in the Peninha area, an elevated point located in the town of Colares, within the Sintra municipality. Positioned between 300 and 490 meters in altitude, it offers an impressive panoramic view over a vast expanse of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. From this natural viewpoint, it is possible to contemplate the coastline stretching from Cabo Espichel to Cabo Carvoeiro. Its exposure to maritime winds contributes to the unique and sometimes rugged environment of the site, typical of this coastal landscape.

Millennial Legacy

This place where the Hermitage of São Saturnino is situated possesses a legacy of profound reverence that spans thousands of years. There are indications that the site was already considered sacred and served as a place of worship for ancient peoples such as the Celts, Lusitanians, Romans, and Visigoths. The very existence of the hermitage is confirmed as early as the 12th century, associated with historical figures from the early Portuguese kingdom, such as D. Paio Peres and Pêro Pais, who sought refuge here. This continuity of devotion over the centuries lends the site an aura of timelessness.

Marks of Time and Heritage

Despite the visible marks of time, the Hermitage of São Saturnino still allows glimpses of some of its original architectural details. In the triumphal arch, for instance, a simple cross, executed in fresco, can be identified on the edge of the stonework, and a nearly imperceptible trace of a Templar cross above it. These elements suggest that the interior of the hermitage was once richly decorated with frescoes. Currently, the structure is in an advanced state of ruin and has suffered acts of vandalism. However, there is an active commitment to its recovery and enhancement by entities dedicated to heritage preservation, seeking to ensure the protection and future of this significant monument.
