Strategic Location

Doca da Marinha is located in Lisbon, in the Santa Maria Maior area, directly on the banks of the Tagus River. Its position offers a privileged viewpoint over the estuary and the city. From this spot, the view extends over the river waters and encompasses the picturesque hill of Alfama, creating a distinctive setting that links Lisbon's urban environment to the vastness of the Tagus.

A Reinterpreted Past

Formerly an area of restricted access and under the domain of the Portuguese Navy for many decades, Doca da Marinha underwent a profound transformation. Following a significant investment, it was inaugurated as a public space in 2021, becoming accessible to all. This rehabilitation returned an important riverfront to the city, allowing Lisboetas and visitors to enjoy an area that was previously closed off, now open to the river and to social interaction.

Architecture and Contemplation

The requalification project for Doca da Marinha was conceived by the renowned architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça. The space, which extends for approximately 300 meters along the bank and covers over 20,000 square meters, is comprised of buildings and various outdoor areas. Its design was conceived to create an atmosphere of spaciousness and connection with the natural landscape, allowing the river breeze to circulate and inviting contemplation of the horizon. It is also possible to observe an artistic installation by Julião Sarmento on site.

Riverfront Dynamics

Doca da Marinha was created with the aim of being a meeting point between people and the river. The location serves as a stage for a variety of initiatives and events, contributing to the capital's vitality. It is a spacious and versatile area, suitable for riverside strolls, for engaging in activities like walking or cycling, and for enjoying late afternoons with the unique landscape that the Tagus offers.
