Location

The Malaposta Cultural Center is located in the town of Malaposta, belonging to the Póvoa de Santo Adrião area, in the municipality of Odivelas. Its position is historically relevant, as it stands on a site that once marked the meeting point of important routes, between the roads connecting Loures to Odivelas and the traditional Calçada de Carriche, one of the ancient entrances to the capital.

This urban setting gives the building a deep connection with the road network and the region's development, inviting visitors to take a look at the evolution of the territory, from the times of stagecoach communication to the contemporary landscape of Odivelas.

From the 19th Century to the Present Day

The history of the Malaposta Cultural Center is a narrative of remarkable transformation. Built between 1855 and 1856, the building was originally designed as a stagecoach station, serving as a model for other similar constructions at the end of the 19th century. At this location, stagecoaches stopped to change horses, ensuring the speed and continuity of postal communications of the time.

Over the years, the building adapted to new realities, later functioning as a municipal slaughterhouse. After decades of abandonment, a cultural initiative in the eighties allowed for its complete rehabilitation. It was restored and carefully adapted to host artistic events, being inaugurated as a Cultural Center in December 1989, giving it a new life and purpose.

A Dynamic Cultural Hub

Today, the Malaposta Cultural Center is a vibrant space dedicated to art and culture in multiple forms. Its programming reflects a commitment to diversity, featuring theater and dance performances, concerts, poetry sessions, visual arts exhibitions, and film screenings. It is a place where ideas and theories are debated, promoting critical thinking and cultural exchange.

This center took a pioneering role as the first of its kind in Portugal to result from an inter-municipal consortium, uniting forces from several neighboring municipalities to provide cultural services. It continues to be a "house with art," essential for the cultural dynamics of Odivelas and the surrounding region.

Traces of a Distinct Past

Architecturally, the Malaposta Cultural Center preserves its original design, characterized by a "U" shaped floor plan, which was typical of stagecoach stations. During its rehabilitation in the 1980s, this structure was carefully maintained, with the addition of a stage tower connected to the central body, without distorting the building's historical identity.

The fusion of 19th-century architecture with modern adaptations for performing arts creates a unique environment where the past meets the present. Visitors can appreciate the solidity and aesthetics of a building that has witnessed different eras, now revitalized to host contemporary artistic expression.
