The Mastrontas Waterfall (Cascata Mastrontas) is located in the area of Mastrontas, belonging to the parish of Almargem do Bispo, Pêro Pinheiro e Montelavar, in the municipality of Sintra. This natural spot is situated in a narrow, wooded valley, where the sound of water mixes with the tranquil atmosphere of the rural landscape. The area retains its wild and largely untouched character, offering direct contact with the typical nature of the saloia region of Sintra.

Access is by foot starting from the old washhouse in the village. The trail follows alongside the level crossing and then descends via a dirt path surrounded by vegetation. Although there is no signage, the route is relatively easy to identify. The descents can be challenging for those with reduced mobility, and the use of appropriate footwear and extra caution on damp days is advisable.

Natural Environment

Fed by a small tributary of the Lizandro River, the waterfall unfolds between moss-covered stone blocks, ferns, and shrubs typical of Sintra's humid slopes. During winter and early spring, the flow is stronger, forming small cascades and clear pools. In summer, the water becomes scarcer, revealing the contour of the rocks and the green texture of the banks.

The location maintains a cool and shaded environment, contrasting with the more open areas nearby. The constant sound of water and the perfume of the vegetation create a calm and immersive atmosphere, ideal for those seeking moments of quietude and contemplation.

Trail and Landscape

The walk to the waterfall takes about fifteen minutes and leads the visitor along a narrow trail that winds between trees and brush. Along the route, ancient stone walls and vestiges of old agricultural fields can be observed, testifying to the traditional use of the land in the parish.

The path ends next to the riverbed, where the waterfall emerges, nestled in a natural amphitheatre of dense vegetation. It is a pleasant spot to rest, listen to the water, and appreciate the natural setting that has remained virtually unchanged over time.

The Mastrontas Waterfall is a simple space, yet full of authenticity. Its discreet access and almost hidden setting enhance the pleasure of discovery. On days with higher flow, the sound of the water echoes among the trees and stands out as one of the most striking elements of the place. The light filtered through the treetops and the intense green of the vegetation make the landscape especially photogenic and serene.
