The Casa da Pesca (Fishing House) is located in Oeiras, situated on the grounds of the former Quinta de Cima, near the Marquês de Pombal Palace. The complex is part of one of the most significant historical sites in the town, surrounded by extensive gardens and wooded areas that create a serene and inviting atmosphere. From here, it is possible to view the Oeiras valley and, in some spots, the Tagus estuary, in a landscape that combines nature and heritage.

The space is part of the monumental complex classified as a National Monument since 1953, which also includes the palace and the gardens of the Marquês de Pombal. Its tranquil, green surroundings invite leisurely strolls and moments of contemplation, away from the urban rhythm.

Origin and History

Commissioned in the 18th century, the Casa da Pesca was a leisure pavilion for the family of the Marquês de Pombal. The name derives from artistic representations linked to fishing, a theme that dominates the building's exterior and interior decoration. Originally, the site was associated with the functioning of pleasure estates, combining rest with spaces dedicated to art and nature.

For decades, the complex belonged to the Pombal family, later passing into private hands and subsequently to the State. The House was integrated into the National Agronomic Station and, in 2019, transferred to the responsibility of the Oeiras municipality, which began restoration work on the building and surrounding gardens.

Architecture and Atmosphere

The Casa da Pesca features a composition of great Baroque elegance, distinguished by the expressive use of blue and white tile panels that clad the exterior walls. These panels, inspired by episodes from The Lusiads and maritime activities, are one of the finest examples of 18th-century tilework in Portugal. The pavilion is flanked by an ornamental tank and an artificial waterfall, framed by columns and sculptures with aquatic motifs, which reinforce the scenic character of the space.

Inside, the ceilings painted by João Grossi evoked scenes of fishing and maritime life, harmonizing with the external environment. The complex was designed to surprise and delight, serving as a setting for parties, concerts, and social gatherings. Even after periods of neglect, the place retains its poetic and aristocratic atmosphere, marked by the relationship between art, water, and nature.

Environment and Surroundings

The garden surrounding the Casa da Pesca maintains part of its original layout, with leafy trees and pathways leading to the main lake. The water surface, reflecting the tile panels and sculptures, creates an image of rare visual harmony. It is a place that invites silence and contemplation, ideal for appreciating the fusion between Baroque architecture and the natural environment.

Despite the phases of degradation it faced, the Casa da Pesca remains a symbol of Oeiras' heritage. Recent municipal interventions aim to restore its original splendor and ensure that this space, deeply linked to local history and identity, can be appreciated by future generations.
