CAMB is located in Lisbon, in Campo Grande, an area characterized by its proximity to the University City and green spaces that provide a tranquil setting for visits. The area combines the urban life of the capital with quiet corners, ideal for those seeking to explore art in a more serene environment.
The building where the center operates is integrated into the urban fabric but maintains a welcoming and silent atmosphere, conducive to contemplating the exhibited works.
The center houses the collection of Manuel de Brito, one of the most influential Portuguese gallerists of the 20th century. A figure connected to culture and the arts, Manuel de Brito stood out not only as a bookseller and publisher but, above all, as a promoter of emerging artists and an attentive collector. His activity was closely linked to significant moments in Portuguese cultural life, especially after the Carnation Revolution.
Throughout his life, he amassed around two thousand works, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, forming a collection of great relevance that is now accessible to the public at CAMB.
The rooms at CAMB feature a simple and luminous layout, designed to highlight the exhibited works. The white walls and neutral-toned flooring create a clear environment that gives prominence to the displayed pieces. It is common to find drawings, paintings, and documents organized both on walls and in central display cases, allowing for diverse readings of the collection.
The atmosphere is tranquil, allowing for unhurried observation of every detail. Exhibitions change periodically, always offering new perspectives on the collection and the represented artists.
A visit to CAMB is marked by the closeness between the visitor and the works. Unlike more crowded spaces, here it is common to find a silent and uncrowded atmosphere, which invites individual contemplation. The environment is sober and at the same time welcoming, reflecting the spirit of Manuel de Brito and his dedication to art.
The encounter with the collection reveals not only the artistic quality of the works but also the memory of a personal and cultural journey that marked several generations of artists and audiences in Portugal.
