District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Belém > Restelo
Located in the Restelo neighborhood, in the parish of Belém, in Lisbon.
It was built to supply the lack of commercial spaces in the area, resulting from the housing growth in the 1940s.
Designed by architect Raúl Chorão Ramalho between 1949 and 1956, this center is the first independent shopping center in the country. Composed of two symmetrical blocks, it is marked by a facade with columns that gives rhythm to the building. On the ground floor, there are shops, while the first floor is occupied by apartments.
The building is decorated with tiles by the artist Querubim Lapa, an artistic detail of great relevance. In 2012, it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
It is worth visiting, not only for the shops and atmosphere, but also for its historical and architectural importance.
