Located in the parish of Avenidas Novas, in Lisbon, this church is an important landmark in the city.
Consecrated in October 1938, it was the first Catholic temple to be built in Lisbon after the establishment of the Portuguese Republic. The church is a notable example of national modernism and was awarded the Valmor Prize in 1938. Since 1971, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.
Designed by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, the church has an irregular rectangular plan with three staggered naves, the central one being wider. The building combines elements of modernism and art deco, with an exposed concrete structure and a flat terraced roof.
Several artists contributed to the decoration of the church, including Francisco Franco (frieze of the apostles), Almada Negreiros (stained glass windows) and Leopoldo de Almeida (sculptures).
The main facade stands out for its high gray stonework base and three large windows protected by stained glass. The bell tower, 45 meters high, is a striking feature, and the baptistery has a circular plan with a dome-shaped roof.
The interior is spacious and illuminated by colored stained glass windows. The central nave is column-free for better visibility of the altar, which is surrounded by side chapels. The space is enriched with paintings, sculptures and frescoes, including the presbytery with a stonework altar and a built-in tabernacle.
Adjacent to the church, the parish center offers various activities and includes areas for events, catechesis and residence of the parish priests.
The church provides a peaceful environment and is a remarkable example of religious architectural innovation in Portugal. Its combination of modernism and traditional elements offers an enriching experience for visitors interested in architecture and religious art.
