The church is located in the parish and Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos, in the Western region, district of Lisbon.
It was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1944.
After the conquest of Lisbon and Sintra in the 12th century, the town of Arruda was handed over to the Order of Santiago. The exact date of construction of the original church is unknown, but it is assumed to have been in the first decades of the 13th century. The current architecture dates from the end of the dominion of the Order of Santiago, possibly started by D. Manuel during a plague escape.
The church is in Manueline style, with a body of three naves and five spans. The facade features a central body with portal and window, typical of late medieval Portuguese Gothic churches. The decoration includes a portal with a canopial profile, pilasters with niches and columns with vegetal decoration.
Inside, the image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade from the 15th century stands out, an object of great devotion in the Middle Ages. The church also has a Mannerist polyptych, commissioned during the end of the dominion of the Order of Santiago.
During these centuries, the interior of the church was substantially modified. The walls and the main altarpiece were covered with tiles, with pseudo-Solomonic columns and vine decoration. In 1744, the high choir was built, which led to changes in the initial structure and covering of the main chapel with blue and white tile panels.
