This unique building is located in Lisbon, in Praça Duque de Saldanha. Situated on a corner plot, it stands out on the eastern side of the square, lending a striking presence to its urban surroundings and harmonizing with the dynamic of this busy part of the city.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1912, this property is a notable example of the eclectic architecture of the period. Its design and decorative treatment are of particular interest, having been recognized for its quality with an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Valmor Prize. It is currently a Property of Public Interest, which underlines its heritage and cultural relevance.
Upon observing its facades, you will notice the remarkable presence of full arches, which dominate its structure. The south-facing facade reveals a particularly attractive arch, with a distinct oriental touch, and the windows within it feature curved "chest stones," creating a visual illusion of a set enclosed in a circle. The wrought iron work is another highlight, with wavy motifs of Art Nouveau inspiration visible on the balcony railings and entrance gates, enriching its aesthetic.
The building's decorative richness extends to details such as the two segmental arches on the southeast facade, where a central column is adorned with meticulous details, including acanthus leaves, a child's face, and garlands. The beauty of the property is the result of the work of various artists of its time; the matte painting was by Gabriel Constante, the modeling was carried out by Perez Mora, and the complex metalwork was executed in the workshops of Jacob Lopes da Silva and Vicente Joaquim Esteves.
