Situated in the heart of the town of Pedrógão Grande, in the district of Leiria, the Pillory is located in the historic Largo do Terreiro. Its presence is notable, rising elegantly next to the main church in a central and easily accessible setting. This point of interest is part of the area known as Tapada da Ladeira, which provides it with a traditional surrounding.
The history of the Pillory of Pedrógão Grande is intrinsically linked to the very foundation and evolution of the town. The region was likely first boosted by the repopulation efforts promoted by King Afonso I, a milestone in the affirmation of the territory. The town's first charter (foral), a document that granted autonomy and rights to the populace, was granted in 1206 by King Sancho I.
Later, in 1513, King Manuel I granted a new charter to Pedrógão Grande, a period that aligns with the construction of this important symbol. In Portugal, pillories were structures erected in towns and cities with a charter, representing municipal autonomy and their power to administer justice, as well as serving as a place for public punishment.
This historic monument, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, is distinguished by its remarkable architecture. It rises majestically on a base of four quadrangular steps, which lend it stability and grandeur. Its column, featuring a smooth octagonal shaft, projects towards the sky, culminating in a 16th-century style top structure.
Built of granite, a durable material characteristic of the region, the pillory exhibits details that unequivocally point to the 16th century, the period of its construction. Its design reflects the Manueline architectural style of the era, evident in the sobriety of its form and the robustness of its execution.
