Pousaflores is located in the municipality of Ansião, in the heart of the Centro region of Portugal, surrounded by agricultural land and gentle hills. The church occupies the Largo das Tílias, a small paved area lined with trees with generous canopies, creating a corner of calm and shade.
The churchyard, with its slightly sloping ground, offers a unique setting: in the distance, a rural landscape dotted with olive and cork trees can be seen. The surroundings retain traces of traditional architecture, with low schist walls and paved paths that allude to the village's history.
The first documentary reference to the church appears in the Parochial Memoirs of 1758, but local tradition points to a much earlier foundation. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, whose devotion is inspired by the miracle of the snow that, in Rome, on the night of August 4th to 5th, 352, supposedly indicated the site for the construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
In the 20th century, a fire led to restoration works that rebuilt the vaulted chancel, preserving the gilded woodwork and recovering some of its original splendor. Since then, the community of Pousaflores has taken care of the conservation of this centuries-old space.
The facade, with its simple lines, is distinguished by the polychrome tile panel illustrating the patron saint, topped by a Latin cross. The door and the upper window, both with curved lintels, create a balanced rhythm, while the three-tiered wooden ceiling adds warmth to the exterior ensemble.
To the left of the pediment stands the bell tower, with four arches and clock faces, crowned by a tapered spire. Inside, light passes through two stained-glass windows, falling on the wooden choir and the traditional tiled floor, giving it an atmosphere of serenity.
In the vaulted chancel, the gilded woodwork contrasts with the stone sculptures of Saint Sebastian, Saint Peter, and Saint Lucy, offering a glimpse of the Baroque taste that marked this temple. The image of Our Lady of the Snows and that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus remain at the center of local devotion.
Recently, a porch was added near the main entrance. Designed by a local artist, it combines wood and iron with simplicity, integrating harmoniously into the churchyard without compromising the historical identity of the building.
