Caldas da Rainha

Caldas da Rainha, located in the heart of the Oeste region, is a city with a history deeply tied to its thermal and artistic vocation. Its foundation dates back to the 15th century, driven by Queen D. Leonor, who recognized the healing properties of the local waters and ordered the erection of a thermal hospital, considered one of the first thermal establishments in the world.

The thermal legacy endures in the city, visible in the architecture of historical buildings and in the very identity of Caldas da Rainha. Beyond the waters, the city is a notable center of ceramics and art, especially recognized for the influence of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. His pieces and his factory, which still produces today, are a landmark of Portuguese ceramic art, with whimsical figures and representations of nature that continue to be widely appreciated.

The D. Carlos I Park, one of the most beautiful urban parks in the country, invites moments of tranquility. With its lake and dense vegetation, it is an ideal space for a relaxing stroll. In the city center, the Praça da Fruta is a vibrant daily market, where local producers sell their fresh products, reflecting the agricultural richness of the region. This market, with its authentic and colorful atmosphere, offers a genuine insight into local life.

The city maintains an active cultural life, with museums and galleries that explore its artistic and historical heritage, providing a deeper understanding of its patrimony and its role in Portuguese culture.

Its tradition is linked to the convents of the region.

Cavacas das Caldas

Speciality

Cavacas das Caldas are a traditional and crispy sweet, covered by a thick and shiny layer of white sugar icing. Its base is a light and airy dough, fried and subsequently coated, resulting in an interesting contrast between the texture of the cake and the sweetness of the icing. They are a symbol of Caldas da Rainha confectionery, popularly known as 'beijinhos' (kisses) due to their small shape and size.
