Built in the small village of Vila Soeiro, in the municipality of Guarda, this chapel is situated in a rural environment typical of the central region of Portugal. Surrounded by olive groves and dryland fields, it offers direct contact with the serene landscape of the Beirão plateau.
Access is via dirt roads and secondary paths, giving visitors a sense of discovery as they approach this white stone sanctuary that stands out against the blue sky.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Chapel of São Pedro de Verona originated as a small rectangular-plan temple, always intended for local religious worship. Its value was officially recognized in 2014, when it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
During restoration work carried out in 1998, frescoes were revealed that had previously remained hidden by a carved altarpiece, bringing to light essential pieces for understanding devotion and sacred art in the region.
Inside, a set of six mural panels stands out, depicting scenes from the Life of Christ, the Flight into Egypt, and episodes related to Franciscan worship, such as Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. These frescoes, with their naive strokes and simple perspectives, are the work of a regional workshop active between the late 16th and mid-17th centuries.
Although the author is unknown, each panel reflects the popular creativity of the era, with earthy colors and firmly outlined figures, lending the space a unique contemplative atmosphere.
The chapel's setting is highlighted by the tranquility of the area: the birdsong and the rustling of leaves envelop the building, inviting moments of pause. The slightly aged granite stone gains prominence under the light of the setting sun, creating plays of shadow that enhance the simple lines of the construction.
Those seeking a viewpoint also gain gentle views over the valley, with soft agricultural undulations and patches of pine forest in the distance, composing a landscape that harmoniously combines heritage and nature.
