The Sequeiros Bridge is a historic example of a Romanesque-style fortified bridge, likely built in the 13th century. It marked the border between Castile and León before these lands were integrated into Portuguese territory by the Treaty of Alcanices. Since 1951, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, also standing out for its role as a customs post over the centuries.
Composed of three semicircular arches, the central one being the largest, the bridge has a square tower on one side, also with a semicircular arch. Its pavement is paved and has a continuous sidewalk, characterizing it as a remarkable work of engineering for the time.
The Sequeiros Bridge is located near the village of Badamalos, over the Côa River, in the municipality of Sabugal, Guarda, in a natural environment of large granite outcrops. The Sequeiros Bridge offers a panoramic view over the Côa River. It is easily accessible from the village of Badamalos, making it an ideal destination for those who appreciate history, medieval architecture, and natural landscapes.
The name "Sequeiros" derives from an old place that existed near the bridge, now disappeared. The stones used in its construction were possibly reused over the centuries for other buildings in the region, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
